In English: And he was often smiling in the faces of his companions.

And he would say:

“If two Muslims meet, and they shake hands, seventy mercies are divided between them — sixty-nine for the one with the brighter face (more cheerful), and one for the other.

So the one who is more cheerful has the greater share of mercy.”

One time, he sent Anas on an errand, and Anas found children playing in the street.

So he sat and played with them.

Then the Prophet ﷺ came along the same road where Anas was playing.

He ﷺ came up behind him and covered his eyes.

Anas said: “I recognized him by his pure fragrance and the coolness of his hand.

So I began to press against him and say: Who is this? Who is this?”

Then he lifted his hands, and it was the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.

He said: “Where is the errand, O Anas?”

I replied: “I’ll go now, O Messenger of Allah.”

He only smiled even more and said to me: “Go.”

Such was his noble character, may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him and his family.
